"The Perfect Storm" is a non-fiction book by Sebastian Junger, first published in 1997. The book is about the 1991 Perfect Storm, a nor'easter that struck the North Atlantic coast of the United States, and the crew of the swordfishing boat Andrea Gail, which was caught in the storm and lost at sea. The book details the events leading up to the storm, the storm itself, and the search and rescue efforts. Junger interweaves the story of the Andrea Gail and its crew with the science of storms and the history of the fishing industry. He also includes accounts from other boats and individuals caught in the storm. The book received high critical acclaim and was a bestseller. It was later adapted into a movie directed by Wolfgang Petersen in 2000.
