Lulu Press is a self-publishing platform that was founded in 2002 by Bob Young, the co-founder of Red Hat, an open-source software company. The company is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA.

The idea for Lulu Press came from Bob Young's experience in the software industry, where he saw the power of open-source models and the potential for a similar model in the publishing industry. He believed that self-publishing would allow more authors to share their work with the world, regardless of whether or not they had been accepted by traditional publishers.

Lulu Press launched in 2002 as a platform for self-publishing and selling books online. Initially, the platform only offered print-on-demand services, allowing authors to print and sell their books in small quantities. But over time, Lulu Press expanded its services to include e-books, audiobooks, photo books and more.

In the early days, Lulu Press faced competition from other self-publishing platforms like iUniverse and Xlibris, but it quickly established itself as a leading player in the industry, thanks in part to its low-cost, user-friendly platform and its commitment to helping authors promote and sell their books.

Over the years, Lulu Press has helped thousands of authors self-publish and sell their books, and has become a recognized name in the publishing industry. In 2021, Lulu Press was acquired by Ingram, one of the largest book distributors in the world, allowing the platform to reach a broader audience and expand its services.

Today, Lulu Press continues to be a leading self-publishing platform, providing authors with the tools and resources they need to self-publish and promote their books. It offers a wide range of services and options for authors to choose from, and it continues to evolve and adapt to the changing publishing landscape.
