"The Good Soldiers" is a non-fiction book by David Finkel, first published in 2009. The book is a firsthand account of the 2-16 Infantry Battalion, part of the U.S. Army's 4th Brigade Combat Team, during their 15-month deployment in Baghdad, Iraq, as part of the "surge" strategy during the Iraq War. Finkel, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, embedded himself with the soldiers, and the book is based on his observations and interviews with the soldiers, their families, and the high-level commanders. The book provides a detailed and personal look at the soldiers' experiences and the impact of the war on them and their families. It also covers the political and strategic context of the war and the challenges and successes of the "surge" strategy. The book received widespread critical acclaim for its powerful and honest portrayal of the human cost of war.
