Oprah's Book Publishing Company: A History

Oprah Winfrey, the well-known media mogul, has had a long-standing relationship with the book publishing industry. In 1996, she launched her own book club on her talk show, "The Oprah Winfrey Show." The book club became extremely popular, with the books she selected often becoming best-sellers. In 2000, Oprah decided to take her love of books one step further and launched her own book publishing company, Harpo Books. The company was a division of Harpo Productions, the production company behind "The Oprah Winfrey Show." Harpo Books was created to publish books that aligned with Oprah's personal beliefs and values, and the company primarily focused on publishing memoirs and self-help books. Harpo Books published several best-selling books, including "The Wisdom of Sundays" by Oprah Winfrey and "The Life You Want" by Oprah's life coach, Robyn Robins. The company also published a number of memoirs by celebrities and public figures, such as "The Road to Oprah's Book Club: The Tell-All Tale of the Books that Changed Oprah's Life" by Robyn Okrant. In 2018, it was announced that Harpo Books would be shutting down its publishing division to focus on other areas of the company. However, Oprah continues to have a strong presence in the book publishing industry through her collaboration with Flatiron Books on the Oprah's Book Club 2.0. The new book club focuses on selecting books across all genres, the first pick was "An American Marriage" by Tayari Jones. Oprah's influence on the book publishing industry has been significant, with her book club selections often becoming best-sellers and her publishing company playing a role in promoting and publishing works by new and established authors.
