Open Educational Resource Textbooks: How to Create and Share

Creating and sharing open educational resource (OER) textbooks can be a great way to make educational materials more accessible and affordable for students. Here are some steps to take when creating and sharing OER textbooks:

  1. Research existing OER textbooks: Before creating a new textbook, it is important to research existing OER textbooks in your subject area to ensure that your textbook is unique and fills a gap in the existing resources.

  2. Develop a content outline: Before beginning to write your textbook, it's important to develop a content outline that clearly lays out the structure and organization of the book. This will help you stay on track as you write and ensure that the finished product is well-organized.

  3. Write and edit the textbook: Once the content outline is complete, it is time to start writing the textbook. It is important to have multiple people review, edit and proofread the textbook, to ensure that it is accurate, clear and error-free.

  4. Choose a license: OER textbooks must be published under an open license, which allows others to use and adapt the materials. Some popular open licenses include Creative Commons and GNU.

  5. Share the textbook: Once the textbook is complete, it's time to share it with the world. There are a number of online platforms that allow you to share OER textbooks, such as OpenStax, Saylor Academy, Connexions, and Wikibooks.

  6. Provide feedback and improvement: It's important to continue to improve the textbook based on feedback from users. This can be done by encouraging feedback from educators and students and updating the textbook accordingly.
